What to take to Uni? | Student Life

One of the most common questions among, myself and my friends is, what do I take to university? It's the first time we really need to think about what we actually need to live with, like kitchen and bedroom supplies.  Then I am one of those people who feel like I am going to over pack, I don't want to turn up with, things I am not going to need however I also do not want to turn up with not enough, so over the last few days I have been compiling lists (more lists) of the basic uni essentials to take with you.

I do not think it is necessarily important for you to take up the entire contents of IKEA's kitchen range or 20 cushions for your bed. Although touches like that can immediately make you feel more homely. Also a trip shopping for those extra bits, when you get there, This could be a good ice breaker and secondly you don't always know what your going to need and you might end up keeping spare items in a box.

I am lucky enough to be in catered accommodation, which provides me food during the week, so it takes some of the pressure off buying things that I am going to need within the first week, however on the weekends I am still going to need the basics to stay alive, or I may just starve.  So below I have compiled, what I hope to be an easy and minimalist list, compared to some which are pages long.

Bedroom
- Duvet
- Pair of Pillows
- Duvet Set (maybe 2, or you can buy a spare when you get there)
- Pair of pillow cases
- Mattress Cover (although not essential)
- Coat Hangers
- Blanket

Bathroom
- 2 Towels (maybe a spare set, again you could buy a set when you get there)
- Bin (again it's not a urgent must, but always hygienic)
- Toothbrush holder

Kitchen
- Couple of Saucepans
- Couple of Frying Plans
- Set of plates (mixture of both big and small)
- Set of bowls
- Cutlery
- Glasses
- Tea Towels
- Ladle
- Stirring Spoon
- Spatula
- Set of Knives
- Chopping Board
- Vegetable Peeler
- Colander
- Mixing Bowl
- Plastic Containers
- Clingfilm and Tin Foil.
Extras
- Cleaning Products
- Basic Staple Foods, so you do not have to rush off to the shops when you get there.
- Stationary, however this depends on your course.

There are lots of other things, in which you can take with you, or leave until you get up there. Items such as a printer can come in handy, however there will be facilities at the university for this capability.

I have also left off personal items such as clothing and beauty, hair products etc. As this will completely depend on who you are.

If there is anything you could think of, let me know and I will add it to the list for future readers.
