First Year Accommodation | Student Life

I cannot express how much I have enjoyed living and being apart of a student community. My entire experience over the last term has been overwhelming, the independence, the people. the course, the list could go on and a large part of it is down to where I am living.

There is nothing worse then disliking where you are living, so picking University accommodation is a huge thing. For the majority most people are content and loving their uni life, their flat and who they are surrounded with but how do you know what is going to suit you. Filling out the application form can be confusing, what are you willing to compromise and where should  you even start looking.

For myself I attend the University of York, a collegiate university. Something which doesn't seem as important as it did within freshers as we battle out with chants against other colleges along the bus to events and into town.  For myself my college plays a massive part of my Uni life, I feel it brings a closer sense of community and you generally end up with like minded people as many colleges have something distinct about one another.

But realistically college life behind, there are not many colleges with the collegiate system. So when choosing a room or halls think about whether your willing enough to share a room, a bathroom or are you much preferring en-suites. What do you value the most in your accommodation? Is it being catered, or living in the halls closest to your course department?

Compromise plays a massive part, you got to remember your on a budget, are you willing to sacrifice the en-suite room to save yourself ten or fifteen pounds weekly.

But realistically I wouldn't worry if you do not get your first choice, getting to halls and your accommodation is much more exciting and while your there the people should make your experience worth it as your all in the same boat.

Personally my accommodation is smaller and not in the nicest looking building, the kitchen could do with decorating and the curtains a change in colour. However I've grown to love my flat, you make it your own. Even though I have seen bigger and more aesthetically pleasing rooms, mine is mine and it's cosier and I would not even change it.

  1. Thanks for sharing this useful article. Rooms near the campus are likely to be expensive, so one should look at areas further away that have good transport links to the university in UK. Check out more tips from UniLife.co.uk
